Prof Seán Hynes

Biography
Professor Hynes is Consultant Histopathologist and Professor in Pathology at the University of Galway and University Hospital Galway. He is Chair of the HSE West/Northwest Region Precision Medicine Network. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and holds a PhD and medical degrees from the University of Galway. He has previously be on staff at the University of Lund in Sweden and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in the areas of proteomics and gene therapy. During his post-graduate training in histopathology Professor Hynes was a Richard Steevens fellow at the Northern Ireland Molecular Pathology Laboratory and Northern Ireland Biobank at Queens University in Belfast. He is a member of the National Cancer Control Programme’s Diagnostics Advisory Group and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Molecular Tumour Board, and was a member of the first National Irish Covid-19 Biobank Research Ethics Committee. He is a previous winner of the George Greene and John D Kennedy Medals from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, as well as the Roddy MacSween Prize from the journal Histopathology. His research interests include digital pathology applications in teaching, biobanking, precision medicine and spatial biology.
