Biography
Prof Mary Cahill is a consultant haematologist in CUH and UHK and a Clinical Professor in University College Cork. She trained in Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, between 1988 and 1997, returning to Ireland to take up the first consultant haematology post in the Mid Western Health Board. As a single handed consultant in MWHB, she worked closely with laboratory colleagues to promote quality and accreditation as well as encourage the research agenda. She moved to a post in Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Kerry in 2004, where she advanced INAB accreditation and supported laboratory scientists and medical colleagues to pursue higher degrees at masters and doctoral level. She has been involved in teaching students of MedLab, Medicine and Nursing. She has held numerous grant awards and initiated research in basic cellular processes in AML, in clinical trials and in biobanking. She is a founder member of Blood Cancer Network Ireland (BCNI), and SFI and ICS funded research venture that has continued since 2015. Now as a member of a growing team of haematologists in CUH, she has developed a subspeciality interest in lymphoid disorders but retains a major interest in the laboratory and laboratory related research.
