Biography
Workshop Title: ‘Rights and Wrongs’ of Cytology Staining.
Abstract:
This workshops is intended to give information to UKNEQAS CPT Diagnostic Cytology scheme members about how we score submitted slides. It will show examples of cases demonstrating why marks have been deducted and which criteria are considered the most important. It will explain how the scheme created the criteria for scoring slides. Advice will be given about how participants can overcome issues leading to poor quality preparations and staining of cytology samples.
Frequently asked questions submitted to the scheme will be discussed and the answers supplied. Emphasis will be placed on how the scheme is not just a ‘tick box’ for UKAS but is there as an
advisory service for laboratories experiencing problems, introducing new methods of preparation or changing suppliers of reagents.
Speaker Bio:
I have 40 years experience in Cytopathology , the majority of this time concentrating on working with Diagnostic Cytology samples. This involved training staff in all aspects of preparatory
methods and pre-screening of these slides. I was involved in setting up the Biomedical Scientist led ROSE service for samples obtained under radiological guidance from a wide variety of body sites. I developed the Immunocytochemistry service for cytology samples. I have been involved with the UKNEQAS CPT Diagnostic Cytology scheme since the pilots and am currently the Coordinator for the scheme. I also provide training webinars and ‘Face to Face microscopy workshops for Diagnostic Cytology.
